Pero su voz no viaja sola, pues en el horizonte, Putin observa desde las sombras, tejiendo con su mirada las redes del conflicto, como un dios ausente que juega con los destinos de aquellos que nunca conocerá. Joe Biden, en la distancia, con las manos llenas de tratados y promesas, mueve fichas en un tablero invisible, su voz resuena en los pasillos de la historia, prometiendo paz y guerra al mismo tiempo. ¿Es él el viento que aviva las llamas o el que intenta apagarlas desde lejos, con palabras que no logran sofocar el rugido de un mundo al borde de la fractura? En Sudán, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan mira las nubes de polvo levantarse, las ciudades se deshacen en sus manos como castillos de arena en la tormenta. Allí, en esa grieta del mundo, la guerra no es metáfora, es el hambre y la muerte que llevan el nombre de los que sufren. Netanyahu y Abbas, dos nombres en un mismo eco, el de una tierra dividida por la sangre y el sueño. Ellos se enfrentan con palabras como espadas, pero en el fondo, la herida sigue abierta, y los que mueren no son los que hablan. Min Aung Hlaing, desde Myanmar, observa el silencio impuesto por las armas, el silencio de los que no pueden alzar la voz. Su sombra se extiende sobre un pueblo que tiembla, mientras el mundo mira hacia otro lado, como si las heridas que no se ven pudieran olvidarse. Yemen arde bajo el nombre de Rashad al-Alimi, un país donde las arenas del desierto se tiñen de rojo cada día, donde el cielo se convierte en un campo de batalla y la paz es solo un sueño que se desmorona con cada explosión. Sahle-Work Zewde y Abiy Ahmed, nombres de Etiopía, se alzan en una tierra donde las heridas se multiplican. La paz se escribe en un papel frágil, y el eco de la guerra siempre está cerca, esperando su momento para volver a ser palabra. Donde creció la poesía
Tuve mi primer contacto con la poesía desde muy temprana edad. Aún conservo vívidamente el recuerdo de una profesora de mi infancia en mi pueblo natal Barahona, Ana Delia, aunque su apellido se me escapa, como esas voces que se pierden en el viento, llevando consigo ecos de un tiempo en el que la inocencia y la creatividad se entrelazaban con una intensidad casi mágica. Ella, en su infinita generosidad, transformaba el aula cada viernes en un genuino santuario del arte. Era un ritual que nos prometía un escape de la rutina escolar, un aventurarse hacia la libertad que solo los versos pueden ofrecer. Nos invitaba a cantar, a declamar y a explorar la rica paleta de emociones que se esconden en las palabras. Y yo, por supuesto, elegía la poesía. Hay algo en ella que resuena con los hilos más profundos de nuestra humanidad, una capacidad extraordinaria para evocar sentimientos y recuerdos inmediatos. En esos momentos, las letras cobraban vida ante mis ojos, y cada verso que recitaba se convertía en un puente hacia un mundo lleno de matices y sensaciones. La poesía, en esos días, no solo era un ejercicio del lenguaje en la escuela; era una revelación. Me ofrecía un espacio donde podía ser yo mismo, un lugar donde la vulnerabilidad y la fortaleza se daban la mano, y donde cada letra, cada estrofa, se antojaba como un reflejo de mis pensamientos más íntimos. Gracias a Ana Delia, comencé a vislumbrar a mirar un universo que todavía estaba por descubrir, uno donde las palabras podían acariciar el alma, desafiar a la razón y abrir las puertas a innumerables posibilidades. Fue así como, en una pequeña aula de mi pueblo, creció la semilla de lo que más tarde se convertiría en mi pasión por la poesía. En uno de esos días especialmente mágicos, en honor al Día de las Madres, me pidió que recitara unos versos que, a pesar del tiempo, aún resuenan en mi memoria. Las palabras eran: “Los zapatitos me aprietan, Las medias me dan calor, El beso que me dio mi madre, Lo llevo en el corazón.” Fue ese momento en mi vida infantil un instante de revelación, un primer destello de lo que la poesía iba a significar para mí. No recuerdo quién escribió esos versos, pero sí lo tengo presente que los memoricé para declamarlos frente a todos mis compañeros de aula. Ese pequeño poema, así como aquel día, nunca se han borrado de mi memoria. Con el paso del tiempo, escribí mi primer poema a la tierna edad de diecisiete años, y desde aquel simple verso recitado en la escuela, la poesía empezó a cobrar una importancia creciente en mi vida. Cuando publiqué mi primer libro de poesía, “Mujeres”, en los noventa, descubrí algo fascinante: aunque la poesía brota de lo más íntimo del poeta, jamás se edifica en soledad. Es, en realidad, un diálogo constante, un intercambio infinito con las voces que nos han precedido. Estas voces, a menudo lejanas y casi siempre invisibles, han moldeado nuestro lenguaje, nuestras percepciones y, en última instancia, nuestra visión del mundo. En mi experiencia, la poesía se ha configurado como una constelación de influencias, un diálogo incesante con poetas que, de alguna manera, han dejado una huella imborrable en cada verso que he escrito. Walt Whitman fue el primero en atraparme. Su capacidad para condensar la vastedad del universo en un solo verso me resultó fascinante. Descubrí en él una poesía que no se quedaba en el reflejo del yo, sino que se lanzaba con fuerza hacia el mundo exterior: la naturaleza, las ciudades, las multitudes. Whitman me enseñó a mirar hacia afuera, a comprender que el poeta es un cronista de lo universal, y que su misión es capturar la totalidad de la experiencia humana, por eso después que leí a ese poeta no he vuelto a ver a New York igual. Desde entonces, he intentado entrelazar lo íntimo con lo colectivo en mis propios versos, unir lo personal con lo vasto, como ríos que inevitablemente desembocan en el mismo mar Caribe. Con Ezra Pound aprendí una lección distinta: el valor de la concisión. Mientras Whitman se expandía hacia lo ilimitado, Pound, con una precisión quirúrgica, despojaba al poema de lo innecesario, refinando cada palabra hasta convertirla en una joya precisa. Me mostró que la belleza de un poema no reside solo en lo que se dice, sino también en lo que se sugiere, en ese espacio entre las palabras que espera ser descubierto. Esa tensión entre la expansión whitmaniana y la brevedad de Pound me ha dejado en un estado constante de búsqueda, oscilando entre la vastedad y la esencia. Federico García Lorca, por su parte, me reveló la música de la poesía. Con él entendí que un poema no solo se lee: se escucha, se siente en la piel. Lorca me enseñó que las palabras son notas de una melodía, y que un poema debe ser capaz de envolver al lector como una canción que se lleva en el cuerpo mucho después de haberla escuchado. El ritmo y el sonido de los versos se volvieron para mí tan importantes como su significado. Charles Baudelaire, en cambio, me enseñó a no temer la oscuridad. Con él descubrí que la poesía no siempre debe ser un refugio de belleza, sino también un espejo para lo grotesco, lo inquietante. Me mostró que, en los rincones más oscuros de nuestra naturaleza humana, también hay poesía, y que no debemos eludir esas zonas sombrías, pues allí también se encuentra la verdad. En la poesía de la experiencia hallé otros maestros: Luis García Montero, Jaime Gil de Biedma, Robert Frost. De ellos aprendí que lo cotidiano encierra lo universal, y que los detalles más pequeños de la vida pueden contener verdades que nos trascienden a todos. Diario de un Embajador en Paraguay.
Primer día,19 de enero 2011 Hoy aterrizamos en Paraguay Silvio Pettirossi, a la siete de la mañana, mi esposa y yo, después de un vuelo que se extendió en el tiempo, pesado, como si las horas cargaran el peso invisible de las expectativas. Sentí que cada minuto que pasaba en el aire no era más que una acumulación de silencios, de pensamientos reprimidos, de preguntas que se negaban a formularse. Desde la ventanilla del avión, el verde infinito del paisaje empezaba a revelarse, interrumpido solo por el trazo incierto de las calles de Asunción. La ciudad, al principio, me pareció desordenada, un rompecabezas que nadie se había molestado en terminar, donde las piezas se mezclaban sin prisa ni lógica. Pero luego, al observar con más detenimiento, esa mezcla entre lo nuevo y lo viejo, lo ordenado y lo caótico, se presentó ante mis ojos como una metáfora clara de lo que está por venir. Quizás nuestra estancia aquí también estaría marcada por esa misma dualidad. No sabía qué esperar de esta tierra, y eso, en cierta forma, me inquietaba. Nunca había sido un hombre que dejara demasiadas cosas al azar. El diplomático, como el militar, debe anticipar, prever, controlar, y aquí no podía controlar nada. La cultura, las costumbres, incluso la lengua, me parecían barreras sutiles pero firmes. Había intentado, antes de partir, imaginar cómo sería Paraguay. Había hojeado libros, leído informes. Pero todo eso era como si hubiera tratado de palpar una niebla espesa; cuanto más me esforzaba, más resbaladizas se volvían las ideas. Mi esposa permanecía a mi lado, inquieta pero sonriente. Quizás, pensé, ella lo tomaría todo con mayor naturalidad que yo. Tal vez se dejaría llevar por esta nueva experiencia con más soltura, sin tantas preguntas, sin esa ansia de querer entenderlo todo antes de siquiera vivirlo. Ella, al menos, tenía una fe que a veces yo envidiaba. Mis únicos contactos aquí eran formales, impersonales. Había intercambiado correos con la secretaria de la embajada, una mujer de eficiencia impecable, pero distante, tan distante que no hubiera sabido decir si era joven o mayor, si tenía familia o vivía sola. Luego estaba la cónsul honoraria, aquella voz que una vez oí por teléfono, cargada de sabiduría, de una especie de serenidad que solo dan los años de vivir en un lugar. Sin embargo, al colgar aquel día, lo que más recordé fue una sutil sensación de soledad en su tono, como si el peso de los años en Paraguay hubiera dejado una marca silenciosa. Me pregunté entonces si yo también sentiría esa soledad, si al pasar el tiempo como embajador en Paraguay me transformaría, me aislaría de mis raíces como a ella. El aire cálido pero extraño, nos recibió con un abrazo espeso cuando bajamos del avión de Avianca. Fue una bienvenida tangible, casi física, que me recordó que ya estábamos en un lugar ajeno al mío, sin mar, solo rodeado de tierra, y partir de ese momento, todo lo que hiciéramos sería en función de este nuevo clima, de esta nueva geografía. La humedad parecía colarse en los pensamientos, como si la misma atmósfera ralentizara nuestras acciones, haciéndonos conscientes de cada paso, de cada respiración. Observé a las personas en el aeropuerto, los rostros que pasaban junto a nosotros, cargados de sus propias historias, de sus propias maletas. Me pregunté cuántos de ellos habrían llegado alguna vez como nosotros, con incertidumbre, con esa mezcla extraña de ilusión y temor que se siente cuando uno se lanza a lo desconocido. ¿Y cuántos de ellos, después de años, habrían hecho de este país su hogar? ¿O cuántos, tal vez, habrían fracasado en el intento, regresando a sus tierras natales con las maletas llenas de una desilusión que ni siquiera podían verbalizar? La espera de las maletas se hizo eterna, pero no me importó. Aproveché ese tiempo para reflexionar sobre lo que vendría. No solo tenía que cumplir con mis obligaciones diplomáticas; esa era la parte sencilla, la que podía controlar. Lo verdaderamente complicado sería encontrar mi lugar aquí, entender un país que aún no comprendía y que tal vez nunca llegaría a comprender del todo. La primera reunión en la embajada estaba programada para la tarde, pero no me preocupaba. Lo que me inquietaba era otra cosa: cómo sería caminar por las calles de Asunción por primera vez, con los ojos de un extranjero, de alguien que busca captar el alma de una ciudad que se resiste a ser descifrada. Cuando finalmente salimos del aeropuerto, con las maletas a cuestas y el corazón pesado por la incertidumbre, supe que este viaje sería mucho más profundo que cualquier vuelo transatlántico. No estábamos aquí solo por un destino profesional, sino por algo más. Basilio Belliard y Kafka
Ir a la Zona Colonial se ha vuelto para mí, al igual que para muchos, un sacrificio que implica una mezcla de nostalgia y obligación. Sin embargo, aquella tarde la ocasión lo justificaba con creces. Mi buen amigo Basilio Belliard, poeta y pensador profundo, se disponía a ofrecer una conferencia sobre uno de los autores más enigmáticos de la literatura universal: Franz Kafka. La conexión entre Belliard y Kafka, aunque inesperada a primera vista, parecía tener una resonancia íntima, casi como si ambos compartieran un diálogo silencioso a través de los tiempos. Mi inquietud inicial por la densa atmósfera kafkiana se vio apaciguada por la expectativa de escuchar a Basilio. El salón comenzó a llenarse lentamente de amigos, escritores, estudiantes y algunos curiosos, todos convocados por el atractivo magnético del autor checo. Kafka no es de esos autores que se pasan por alto. Su sombra se proyecta sobre la literatura contemporánea como una presencia inevitable, un espectro cuya mano invisible moldea el lenguaje, el pensamiento y el sentido mismo de lo que significa existir en un mundo absurdo. Aquella tarde, el ambiente parecía cargado de esa misma energía; como si el alma de Kafka estuviera presente en cada esquina del salón. Esa noche la tertulia de la librería Cuesta se había trasladado ahí. Debo confesar, no sin cierto rubor, que Kafka no había sido nunca uno de mis autores predilectos. Su narrativa, impregnada de angustia existencial, instituciones ininteligibles y desolación, siempre me había resultado algo impenetrable, como una fortaleza a la que no lograba encontrarle la puerta de entrada. Pero algo cambió esa tarde. Fue la claridad con la que Basilio Belliard abordó los laberintos kafkianos lo que, de repente, me hizo abrir los ojos. Con una voz pausada pero firme, y una pasión evidente en cada palabra, Belliard logró iluminar lo que antes se me antojaba oscuro. Me sentí, de pronto, urgido a redescubrir a Kafka, a desandar los pasos y adentrarme nuevamente en sus territorios extraños. Plinio Chahín, perpetuamente agudo y mordaz en su observación, percibió mi despertar con una celeridad que solo él podía manifestar. Con su característica habilidad para recomendar libros en el momento preciso, me instó a que considerara la adquisición de las “obras completas” de Kafka, que, sorprendentemente, habían experimentado una caída en su precio—una astucia que remite, sin duda, a sus orígenes árabes. No tardé en acoger su consejo. Así, el impulso por reconciliarme con el gran autor praguense se convirtió en una necesidad ineludible, como si el destino mismo me empujara hacia sus páginas, anhelando redescubrir aquellas laberínticas profundidades que habían dejado una huella indeleble en mi juventud literaria. Nada menos que un llamado de regreso a la esencia de la condición humana, las obras de Kafka emergen como una breve luz en la penumbra del entendimiento, donde el sufrimiento y el absurdo no se presentan solo como temas literarios, sino como un reflejos de nuestra propia existencia. La invitación a este redescubrimiento no es solo una cuestión de lectura, sino un viaje a través de los laberintos de la mente, una búsqueda sin fin, donde cada página se convierte en un espejo que refleja la complejidad de nuestras ansias y temores. Kafka es, sin duda, un autor cuya lectura exige paciencia y entrega. No es un placer inmediato ni mucho menos superficial. Su prosa, aparentemente sencilla, esconde una profundidad filosófica que abruma. Nos habla de seres humanos enfrentados a fuerzas más allá de su comprensión: máquinas burocráticas, sistemas opacos, reglas arbitrarias que parecen burlarse de la razón y la lógica. En este sentido, Kafka es el cronista de la alienación moderna, de esa desesperación que surge cuando el individuo se encuentra frente a instituciones que lo aplastan, lo reducen y, en última instancia, lo anulan. Basilio Belliard comprendió esto con una claridad asombrosa. Desde su primera alusión a “La metamorfosis”, uno de los relatos más icónicos de Kafka, trazó el paralelismo entre la transformación física de Gregorio Samsa y la alienación existencial que todos sufrimos en algún momento de nuestras vidas. Al igual que Samsa, somos a menudo criaturas atrapadas en una piel ajena, desconcertados por un entorno que no nos reconoce ni nos entiende. Samsa, convertido en un insecto monstruoso, es el símbolo perfecto de nuestra incomodidad en un mundo que se ha vuelto extraño e inhóspito. Otro punto central de la conferencia fue la obra “El proceso”. Belliard capturó la esencia de Josef K., un hombre que se enfrenta a un sistema judicial impenetrable, arrestado por un crimen que desconoce. La genialidad de Kafka, subrayada por el poeta dominicano, radica en la universalidad de esta experiencia: todos somos, de alguna manera, Josef K., atrapados en sistemas cuyo funcionamiento nos es ajeno, donde las reglas cambian sin previo aviso y el juicio es inevitable, aunque el delito nunca se nos revele. Belliard también destacó la importancia de “El castillo”, donde Kafka lleva la idea del poder inalcanzable a su máxima expresión. El agrimensor K., en su lucha por acceder al castillo que gobierna la aldea, se enfrenta a una burocracia infinita, un laberinto administrativo que le niega cualquier avance. Es, en muchos sentidos, la metáfora perfecta de la lucha humana contra un poder invisible, impenetrable e incomprensible. En las palabras de Belliard, quedó claro que Kafka, más allá de su pesimismo, nos confronta con una verdad esencial: la vida misma es un constante intento de acceder a un “castillo” que siempre parece estar fuera de nuestro alcance. Lo que más me sorprendió durante la conferencia fue la habilidad de Belliard para entrelazar la angustia personal de Kafka con su obra literaria. La compleja relación que Kafka mantuvo con su padre, ese permanente sentimiento de opresión y minuciosidad que lo acompañó a lo largo de su vida constituyó un tema recurrente en sus escritos. En su “Carta al padre”, Kafka desnudó su alma, revelando la inmensa sombra que la figura paterna proyectaba sobre su existencia. Desde tiempos inmemoriales, la figura del embajador ha estado envuelta en un aura de misterio, discreción y ceremonia. No era simplemente un emisario que cargaba consigo mensajes de un monarca a otro; era, más bien, un actor silencioso en la trama del poder, una sombra que atravesaba cortes extranjeras con la destreza de quien entiende que cada palabra, cada gesto y cada silencio tiene el peso del destino. En un mundo donde las palabras cruzaban océanos montadas en carretas de viento y marea, y los pactos y alianzas se fraguaban en la penumbra de intrincados códigos, el embajador era un maestro del equilibrio, un escultor del devenir internacional. No pronunciaba discursos públicos, pero susurros en los oídos adecuados podían decidir la paz o desatar guerras. Era, sin duda, un artista de lo invisible. Ser embajador no solo implicaba un título de prestigio, sino una responsabilidad colosal. Las palabras que cruzaban sus labios no eran improvisadas; eran cuidadosamente seleccionadas y pesadas como si de armas se tratara, capaces de inclinar la balanza de las relaciones entre naciones. En la discreción radicaba su poder, y en el arte de leer entre líneas su verdadera habilidad. El mensaje, más que las palabras, era el subtexto. Ser embajador era un oficio de sutilezas. Aquella diplomacia de antaño era lenta, deliberada y profundamente reflexiva. Los mensajes podían tardar semanas en llegar, pero cuando lo hacían, su contenido estaba minuciosamente estructurado, cargado de significados que debían ser interpretados con extremo cuidado. Nada era casual. Los embajadores se movían en escenarios donde lo no dicho tenía, muchas veces, más peso que lo pronunciado, y la capacidad de tejer acuerdos residía en las pausas, en los gestos que solo un ojo entrenado podía interpretar. Era un juego de sombras, donde la penumbra ofrecía más claridad que la luz del día. Sin embargo, el mundo ha cambiado. La tecnología ha barrido con los antiguos ritmos pausados y ha impuesto una nueva realidad: la de la inmediatez. Hoy, la información viaja más rápido que el pensamiento, y los embajadores, aquellos guardianes de los secretos de Estado, se enfrentan a un desafío que pocos de sus predecesores habrían imaginado: la hiperconectividad de las redes sociales, la diplomacia del Chat. Los diplomáticos, una vez entrenados para operar en la discreción, ahora se ven inmersos en un escenario de exposición pública. Ante este nuevo panorama, surge una pregunta inevitable: ¿debería el embajador, aquel maestro de los silencios, convertirse en una suerte de “influencer” digital? Para los puristas, la sola idea es poco menos que una herejía. La diplomacia, tal como la conocemos, ha sido siempre el reino de lo sutil, de lo no dicho, del arte de tejer acuerdos en la penumbra. Pero el mundo actual exige adaptaciones. Los embajadores, aquellos emisarios entrenados para moverse en oscuros salones de mármol, deben ahora operar también en la luminosidad pública que ofrecen las redes sociales. Ya no basta con hablar en secreto ante los poderosos; el embajador contemporáneo debe, en ocasiones, dirigirse a las masas, proyectar la imagen de su país no solo ante gobiernos extranjeros, sino ante millones de ciudadanos en tiempo real. En este nuevo juego, la comunicación ha cambiado. Las palabras no solo deben ser cuidadosas, sino también rápidas. Las redes sociales ofrecen un campo de acción inédito, donde un diplomático que sepa dominar las herramientas digitales puede influir no solo en las cancillerías extranjeras, sino también en la opinión pública global. Pero el riesgo es evidente: la inmediatez no debe reemplazar la profundidad, y lo efímero no puede suplantar lo esencial. Porque, aunque un tuit pueda abrir un debate, un susurro en el oído adecuado puede sellar la paz. Es cierto que la tentación de convertirse en una figura pública más accesible es poderosa. Un embajador con miles de seguidores en Twitter, o con una cuenta de Instagram que acumula “likes” puede ser visto como un éxito moderno de la diplomacia pública. Sin embargo, la esencia de la diplomacia, ese arte que ha perdurado por siglos, no se construye en la superficie, sino en las profundidades. Los grandes acuerdos, aquellos que cambian el curso de la historia, no se negocian en el escenario público de las redes sociales, sino en la discreción de las oficinas, donde el tiempo y la paciencia son las verdaderas armas del poder. El embajador, por tanto, sigue siendo un maestro en el arte de navegar entre dos mundos. Uno, el tradicional, exige discreción, paciencia y una comprensión profunda del poder de los silencios. El otro, el moderno, demanda velocidad, transparencia y la capacidad de conectarse de manera inmediata con el público. El reto radica en equilibrar ambos. Porque la tradición, lejos de ser una reliquia, sigue siendo el cimiento sobre el que se construye la diplomacia moderna. No obstante, las redes sociales también ofrecen oportunidades inéditas para los diplomáticos. Pero siempre debe tener presente que estas herramientas son un complemento, no un sustituto. La verdadera diplomacia sigue ocurriendo en la penumbra. Allí, en las conversaciones discretas, donde las palabras no pronunciadas tienen más peso que las dichas, se teje el verdadero poder. Y aunque el embajador moderno debe moverse con soltura en el mundo digital, nunca debe perder de vista su misión principal: ser el guardián de los intereses de su país a largo plazo. Porque, al final, la diplomacia, como el buen arte, requiere paciencia, reflexión, discreción, y sobre todo, la capacidad de influir. Mateo Morrison y la Feria del libro.
Aquella mañana, la Plaza de la Cultura parecía más grande de lo usual, como si las dimensiones de la ciudad misma se hubieran dilatado para abarcar no solo los edificios y monumentos, sino también las memorias y las voces que la habitaban. Esa atmósfera especial que envuelve a los lugares donde la historia y el arte se entrelazan parecía acogerme, aunque al mismo tiempo me desorientaba. Mientras intentaba orientarme hacia el Museo Nacional de Historia y Geografía, me di cuenta de que el propósito inicial de mi visita había quedado eclipsado. Lo que parecía un simple recorrido por un evento cultural se transformaba, minuto a minuto, en un reto laberíntico. La Plaza, con sus esculturas dispersas y su arquitectura monumental, ya no era solo un espacio físico, sino una suerte de representación abstracta de la memoria colectiva, un mapa invisible donde las rutas eran dictadas por el azar y la intuición más que por la lógica. Incluso el guardia en la entrada del museo, amable pero confuso, fue incapaz de señalarme una dirección clara. Y como tantas veces ocurre en la vida, fue el azar el que decidió intervenir, o más bien, fue el lugar el que me encontró a mí. Sin saberlo, había llegado exactamente donde debía estar, y ese encuentro inesperado comenzaba a revelarse como una metáfora perfecta para el momento que estaba a punto de vivir. Entré al edificio y, para mi sorpresa, me encontré con el poeta José Mármol. Su figura tranquila, aunque siempre envuelta en un aura de actividad febril, me recordó que, para muchos, la poesía no es solo un arte, sino un oficio diario, una práctica incesante de búsqueda y creación. Charlamos brevemente sobre nuestros proyectos, y en medio de la conversación, me reveló que en pocos días estaría viajando a Bulgaria, donde se llevaría a cabo una semana cultural dedicada a la poesía dominicana. Mientras él hablaba, imaginé las calles de esa lejana ciudad europea, resonando con las voces poéticas de autores dominicanos traducidos al búlgaro, donde cada poema hallaría un eco en las piedras antiguas de esas calles, como si la literatura pudiera, una vez más, superar las distancias geográficas y culturales. Aquel día el aire estaba cargado de una energía sutil pero inconfundible, esa sensación indefinible que se experimenta cuando uno es testigo de un acontecimiento trascendental, aunque en ese momento aún no lo sepa del todo. Fue entonces cuando vi acercarse a al poeta Mateo Morrison, cuya presencia llenaba el espacio de una calidez inusual. Vestido con su habitual sobriedad, lucía un traje de kaki que, aunque sencillo, parecía apropiada para la ocasión. Su sonrisa amplia y franca lo precedía, y en sus ojos brillaba una luz que delataba algo más que una simple satisfacción: era la emoción contenida de alguien que sabe que su momento ha llegado, pero que no ha buscado ese reconocimiento activamente, sino que ha llegado a él casi como una consecuencia natural de una vida entregada al arte y a la poesía. Morrison era, en ese instante, el epicentro de la sala Vertilio Alfau del Museo. Amigos, colegas y discípulos lo rodeaban, pero no había en él esa actitud altiva que muchas veces acompaña a quienes son homenajeados. Al contrario, su modestia era palpable. Movía las manos con un nerviosismo casi infantil, como si el homenaje que estaba a punto de recibir fuera un regalo inesperado, una especie de recompensa largamente soñada, pero nunca del todo anticipada. Sabía que ese día no era solo una celebración personal, sino un reconocimiento al arduo camino de todos aquellos que, como él, han dedicado su vida a la palabra. La sala pronto se llenó de conversaciones y murmullos, y entre los asistentes reconocí a figuras ilustres del ámbito cultural dominicano. Los viceministros de Cultura ocupaban sus asientos, y entre ellos me encontré con Marito, el hijo de Don Mariano Lebrón Saviñón. Tuvimos una breve pero animada conversación sobre la siempre compleja tarea de escribir cuentos, y entre risas y comentarios sobre las dificultades del oficio, me prometió enviarme su primer libro a través de un amigo en común. Ese pequeño gesto me hizo recordar que la vida literaria no es solo una cuestión de obras y publicaciones, sino una red de relaciones, promesas informales y alianzas intelectuales que tejen la trama invisible de la cultura. Finalmente, llegó el momento esperado. La Ministra de Cultura, Milagros Germán, hizo su entrada con la elegancia y el aplomo que la caracterizan. Vestida con una camisa blanca impecable y un pantalón negro, su sola presencia acalló los murmullos de la sala. Se acercó al micrófono y, con una voz firme pero serena, anunció lo que muchos ya sospechábamos: la Feria Internacional del Libro 2024 estaría dedicada a Mateo Morrison y a la comunidad dominicana de Washington Heights, bajo el lema "Los Libros Conectan". El impacto emocional de ese anuncio fue innegable. Era un reconocimiento largamente esperado, no solo para Morrison, sino para todos aquellos que, como él, han luchado incansablemente por mantener viva la llama de la poesía en la República Dominicana. Morrison, siempre humilde, parecía incapaz de creer que todo esto estaba sucediendo a su alrededor. Pero allí estaba, siendo homenajeado en el evento cultural más importante del país, y con él, todos los que han visto en la palabra escrita una forma de resistencia, de expresión y de redención. La poesía, desde ese momento, adquirió un nuevo significado. La Feria del Libro no sería solo un encuentro de escritores y lectores, sino una celebración del poder transformador de las letras, de la capacidad del arte para conectar generaciones y culturas. Morrison, con su inquebrantable dedicación y su gran obra poética, es el testimonio vivo de ese poder. Debate Trump y Harris.
Vi, no sin una extraña mezcla de sorpresa y desilusión, el reciente debate electoral entre el expresidente Donald Trump y la actual vicepresidenta Kamala Harris. El ambiente en el auditorio se sentía cargado, no tanto por la profundidad de las ideas o la solidez de las propuestas, sino por algo más ruidoso y trivial: las descalificaciones. Como si ambos contendientes, olvidando su peso político y su responsabilidad histórica, hubieran decidido ceder al más primitivo de los impulsos: el ataque personal, la réplica mordaz y la ofensa rápida. Fue en ese instante, mientras observaba la pantalla de televisión que no dejaba de proyectar las imágenes de este duelo verbal sin fondo, que recordé uno de los momentos más icónicos de la política estadounidense: el debate entre Ronald Reagan y Jimmy Carter en 1980. Me sobrevino, casi como un eco distante, la frase que Reagan lanzó con la elegancia de quien sabe que lleva la verdad consigo: "Pregúntense, ¿están mejor hoy que hace cuatro años?". Aquella pregunta, tan simple y devastadora, condensaba en sí todo lo que se espera de un verdadero debate político: una reflexión seria sobre el estado de la nación, una invitación a que los votantes evaluaran su presente y su pasado. No había ataques personales, no había espectáculo ni la necesidad de humillar al contrincante. Solo un llamado a la introspección, a que cada ciudadano, desde su pequeño rincón en el vasto mapa de los Estados Unidos, pensara si su vida, la de su familia y la de su comunidad había mejorado o empeorado bajo la administración de Carter. Y en esa reflexión íntima, en ese diálogo silencioso entre el candidato y el electorado, Reagan supo ganar la confianza de un país entero. El contraste entre esos dos momentos no podría ser más brutal. De un lado, el debate moderno, convertido en un espectáculo mediático, donde cada palabra parece diseñada no para convencer sino para destruir; donde el votante es un espectador pasivo, un simple consumidor de insultos. Del otro lado, la política de la antigua escuela, donde el objetivo principal era presentar una visión clara del futuro y donde, al final, el respeto por la inteligencia del votante prevalecía. ¿Qué nos ha pasado, entonces, en este recorrido? ¿Cuándo dejó la política de ser ese noble arte de convencer con argumentos y propuestas para convertirse en un simple concurso de popularidad, donde quien grita más fuerte o golpea más bajo parece ganar más puntos? Es una reflexión amarga, porque en ella se esconde la realidad de nuestra decadencia política, no solo en Estados Unidos, sino en buena parte del mundo. Los debates, antaño momentos cruciales para la democracia, se han transformado en espectáculos que apelan a la emoción más que a la razón, a la división más que a la unidad. Y en esa espiral descendente, hemos olvidado que la política es, o debería ser, un ejercicio de responsabilidad. Al recordar la pregunta de Reagan, uno no puede evitar desear que algún día volvamos a ver debates donde los candidatos se atrevan a enfrentar al electorado con una pregunta tan sencilla y, a la vez, tan difícil de responder: “¿Están mejor hoy que hace cuatro años?”. Pero para que eso ocurra, debemos exigir más de nuestros líderes. Debemos recuperar la dignidad del debate y, más importante aún, recordar que el verdadero poder no está en los que hablan, sino en los que escuchan. El votante no es un espectador. Es, en el fondo, el verdadero protagonista. Sentí ese día la nostalgia por un debate como aquellos tiempos. Reagan supo, en su momento, que la política no era simplemente una cuestión de victorias momentáneas en el campo de batalla de las palabras, sino un ejercicio de rendición de cuentas ante la historia. Quizá, solo quizá, algún día volvamos a ver un candidato que, en lugar de arrojar descalificaciones, simplemente nos pida que nos preguntemos si estamos mejor que antes. Hoy, tras ver este último debate, no puedo evitar sentir que la respuesta es un rotundo "no". Hasta el próximo sábado.
Diplomático-escritor
A lo largo de mi carrera diplomática, una pregunta ha resonado en mi mente con incesante insistencia: ¿qué vino primero, el diplomático o el escritor? Tras una vida navegando entre estas dos realidades, puedo responder con la certeza que otorgan los años: el escritor. Antes de asumir la noble tarea de representar a mi país en el extranjero, ya me hallaba inmerso en el vasto universo de las palabras. Sin embargo, descubrí que la diplomacia no era un territorio ajeno a la escritura; al contrario, hallé en ella un espacio natural donde cultivé el poder transformador de la palabra. El año pasado, tuve el honor de participar en un panel del Instituto de Educación Superior en Formación Diplomática y Consular (INESDYC), un organismo del Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores (Mirex). Junto a mis estimados colegas, los embajadores Tony Raful y Juan Bolívar Díaz, compartimos un diálogo que exploró las fascinantes intersecciones entre la diplomacia y la literatura, dos disciplinas que, a primera vista, parecen dispares, pero que en el fondo están irremediablemente conectadas. Al reflexionar sobre esta relación, veo un enigma que se despliega a lo largo de los siglos. El diplomático, al igual que el escritor, es un viajero que atraviesa fronteras, no solo físicas, sino también de ideas, culturas y perspectivas. Con cada palabra, teje puentes que unen naciones y sus ciudadanos. En mi propia experiencia, la diplomacia me ha enseñado que las palabras no son meros instrumentos de negociación; son fuerzas creativas capaces de transformar la realidad. Cada discurso, cada informe, cada conversación se convierte en un acto de creación, un paso hacia la comprensión mutua. Un diplomático que escribe no solo narra las crónicas de las relaciones internacionales, sino que también captura los anhelos, las luchas y las esperanzas de los pueblos. La escritura se convierte en una herramienta capaz de traducir lo inefable, de expresar las emociones y tensiones de la interacción humana en términos comprensibles, e incluso poéticos. Así, da vida y color a los matices de las interacciones diplomáticas, que de otro modo podrían parecer frías y calculadas. Es natural preguntarse por qué tantos diplomáticos encuentran su vocación en la literatura. La respuesta reside en la misma naturaleza de la diplomacia: un arte, por excelencia, de la palabra. El diplomático que ignora el poder del lenguaje corre el riesgo de perderse en un laberinto de ambigüedades y malentendidos. La claridad, la precisión y la sutileza son esenciales en las negociaciones internacionales. En un mundo donde la comunicación es instantánea y las relaciones evolucionan a un ritmo vertiginoso, la capacidad de escribir con maestría se convierte en una herramienta indispensable, incluso para un pequeño país caribeño, como lo describiría el poeta nacional Pedro Mir, ubicado en el mismo trayecto del sol. Para mí, escribir no es solo un ejercicio funcional, sino una actividad creativa y reflexiva. La literatura me permite explorar la condición humana desde un ángulo que la diplomacia, por sí sola, no puede ofrecer. Gabriel García Márquez, aunque no fue un diplomático designado, transitó por el mundo diplomático como intermediario entre la dictadura de Fidel Castro y el ámbito literario, afirmaba que la escritura es un refugio donde las palabras encuentran su forma más pura. Así, ser tanto escritor como diplomático es conjugar dos roles que aspiran, en última instancia, a transformar la realidad a través de la palabra. A lo largo de la historia, muchos diplomáticos han dejado un legado literario imborrable. Desde Rubén Darío y Pablo Neruda hasta Octavio Paz, la pluma de estos gigantes trascendió sus responsabilidades, inmortalizando ideas, emociones y visiones de sus épocas. Fascina comprobar cómo la diplomacia, en su esencia, celebra la búsqueda del entendimiento mutuo, el diálogo y la reflexión profunda sobre la condición humana. En América Latina, numerosos escritores han hallado en la diplomacia una fuente inagotable de inspiración. Figuras como Andrés Bello, Gabriela Mistral, Alfonso Reyes, Alejo Carpentier y Jorge Edwards se destacan en este ámbito, al mismo tiempo que en la República Dominicana, nombres como Manuel de Jesús Galván, Manuel del Cabral, Fabio Fiallo, Joaquín Balaguer, Julio Vega Batlle, Alfredo Fernández Simó, Miguel Reyes Sánchez y Alberto Despradel, Andrés L. Mateo, Manuel Morales Lama, Aníbal de Castro, Víctor Manuel Grimaldi, Julio Cuevas, entre otros, han dejado una huella imborrable en la diplomacia intelectual dominicana. Carpentier, durante su misión diplomática en Haití, descubrió la semilla que germinaría en “El reino de este mundo”, una obra en la que lo político y lo literario se entrelazan de manera magistral, creando un tapiz donde la realidad histórica cobra vida a través del lenguaje. Asimismo, Jorge Edwards nos obsequió “Persona non grata”, un retrato crítico que disecciona las complejidades de la diplomacia y el poder, donde su propia experiencia en Cuba se convierte en el lienzo sobre el cual esboza las tensiones y contradicciones de las relaciones internacionales. Estos autores no solo plasmaron sus vivencias, sino que transformaron la experiencia diplomática en arte, dejando un legado que sigue resonando en las letras de nuestra región. En última instancia, mi papel como escritor-diplomático ha sido y sigue siendo el de mediador entre dos realidades que, aunque aparentemente dispares, se encuentran intrínsecamente conectadas: el mundo de la diplomacia y el de la creación literaria. Me hallo constantemente a caballo entre estos dos universos, oscilando entre lo concreto y lo abstracto, lo tangible y lo imaginado, lo político y lo artístico. Como diplomático, mi deber consiste en representar los intereses de mi nación, salvaguardar sus principios y negociar, en su nombre, en el escenario internacional. Sin embargo, como escritor, mi función va más allá de lo meramente protocolario o estratégico. Mi misión es interpretar, desentrañar y transmitir las complejidades del alma humana, tanto a nivel individual como colectivo, y explorar cómo esta se manifiesta en las relaciones que configuran la interacción entre los pueblos. El diplomático, es un actor silencioso en el teatro del poder, vive inmerso en la realidad política de su época, rodeado de tratados y acuerdos que a menudo parecen desvinculados de las grandes pasiones humanas.
Abinader y Blinken.
En el mundo cambiante del escenario de la política internacional, la relación entre los Estados Unidos y la República Dominicana ha comenzado a escribir un nuevo capítulo bajo el mandato de nuevo periodo gub ernamental de Luis Abinader. Lo que antes parecía un delicado equilibrio entre naciones desiguales hoy se ha transformado en una alianza sólida y estratégica, testimonio del cuidadoso manejo que ambas partes han hecho de sus intereses compartidos en un Caribe caracterizado por asimetrías históricas, tensiones regionales y fluctuaciones geopolíticas. Desde la administración demócrata de Joe Biden, la mirada hacia Santo Domingo se ha intensificado, pasando de la mera cortesía diplomática a un entendimiento profundo de la posición estratégica que ocupa la República Dominicana en la región. Para los Estados Unidos, este pequeño pero crucial país caribeño ha dejado de ser simplemente un vecino, y se ha convertido en un socio confiable en asuntos que van desde la seguridad hasta el desarrollo económico. En este juego de intereses, Abinader ha sabido capitalizar las oportunidades, colocando a su nación como un actor de peso en la región. La política exterior estadounidense, guiada por los principios de estabilidad, seguridad y desarrollo, ha encontrado en Abinader un aliado pragmático. Así lo demuestra el reciente acuerdo de “Cielos Abiertos”, que trasciende lo meramente protocolario y se convierte en un puente tangible entre ambas naciones. La facilidad de vuelos no solo incrementa el turismo, columna vertebral de la economía dominicana, sino que abre la puerta a un flujo constante de inversiones y oportunidades comerciales. Cada avión que aterriza en los aeropuertos dominicanos transporta, además de turistas, una promesa de crecimiento y expansión económica. El turismo, vital para la República Dominicana, ha encontrado un nuevo impulso gracias a esta relación estratégica con Washington. No se trata solo de cifras, sino del renovado interés por la nación como un destino seguro y próspero. Los visitantes estadounidenses, más que una fuente de ingresos, son un símbolo de la confianza depositada en la estabilidad política y económica del país. Esta dinámica, sumada a la inclusión de los ciudadanos dominicanos en el programa Global Entry, refuerza la percepción de un gobierno que ha demostrado su capacidad para gestionar de manera eficiente la seguridad y la movilidad de sus ciudadanos. El escenario de seguridad y cooperación migratoria es solo una faceta de esta relación que florece bajo la atenta mirada de la comunidad internacional. Las recientes visitas del secretario de Estado, Antony Blinken, son más que encuentros diplomáticos: son manifestaciones claras de la importancia que la República Dominicana ha adquirido para los Estados Unidos. Blinken, en su discurso desde el Palacio Nacional, destacó la relevancia de esta alianza, señalando que el crecimiento económico dominicano es el más sólido del Caribe. Y aunque estas palabras podrían parecer un cumplido, en realidad reflejan una realidad irrefutable: la economía dominicana ha crecido con resiliencia, cimentada sobre políticas responsables y un ambiente propicio para las inversiones extranjeras. En este contexto, Abinader ha demostrado ser un líder que comprende las complejidades de un mundo interconectado, aunque su país no cuente con recursos tan codiciados como el petróleo. Bajo su mando, la República Dominicana ha conseguido posicionarse como un socio fiable en un tablero geopolítico donde cada movimiento cuenta. La administración dominicana, lejos de dejarse llevar por las corrientes de la política internacional, ha sabido trazar su propio rumbo, atrayendo inversiones y estableciendo alianzas que fortalecen no solo su economía, sino también su estatus como líder regional. Este protagonismo en la escena internacional no es producto de la casualidad, sino el resultado de una estrategia diplomática inteligente y visionaria. Los Estados Unidos, conscientes de la estabilidad que la República Dominicana aporta a la región, han estrechado sus lazos con el país caribeño, buscando en esta relación no solo beneficios económicos, sino también una influencia positiva en la estabilidad regional. Las palabras de Blinken en su visita reciente son un claro indicio de que la alianza entre ambas naciones tiene un futuro prometedor y está llamada a ser un pilar para la seguridad y el progreso en el Caribe. En última instancia, esta relación entre Estados Unidos y la República Dominicana es un reflejo de cómo las alianzas, cuando están cimentadas en intereses comunes y en una visión compartida de desarrollo, pueden perdurar y florecer. La República Dominicana ha dejado de ser un país más en la región para convertirse en un modelo de cooperación y crecimiento, con un papel cada vez más protagónico en la agenda internacional. A medida que continúe consolidando esta relación, el país tiene la oportunidad de seguir construyendo sobre estos cimientos, asegurando su lugar como un bastión de estabilidad y progreso en el Caribe. El camino que Luis Abinader y su gobierno han comenzado a recorrer, con la cooperación de los Estados Unidos, es uno que promete un futuro brillante. La historia nos enseña que las naciones, al igual que las personas, necesitan momentos de oportunidad para fortalecer sus lazos, y este es sin duda uno de esos momentos. Con un horizonte despejado, la República Dominicana tiene en sus manos la posibilidad de convertirse en un referente de estabilidad y desarrollo en la región, un ejemplo de cómo la diplomacia y la visión estratégica pueden transformar el destino de una nación.
Octavio Paz y la diplomacia
Octavio Paz es, sin lugar a duda, una figura única dentro de la literatura y la diplomacia mexicana. Su carrera como poeta y su trayectoria como embajador se entrelazaron de manera tal que resulta casi imposible separarlas sin perder de vista la totalidad de su pensamiento y obra. Paz, como Mario Vargas Llosa, entendía la escritura como una forma de compromiso con el mundo, pero su enfoque era diferente: mientras Vargas Llosa veía en la ficción una herramienta para denunciar las injusticias sociales y políticas, Paz veía en la poesía y en la diplomacia un campo de juego para las ideas, un espacio donde se podían tender puentes entre mundos aparentemente irreconciliables. Cuando se examina más de cerca la figura de Paz como diplomático, se descubre que no fue un simple funcionario de gobierno. Su nombramiento como embajador en la India, un país cuyas tradiciones y espiritualidad lo cautivaron, fue más que un puesto diplomático: fue una extensión de su búsqueda como poeta. A través de su vida en la India, Paz no solo representó a México en un contexto geopolítico, sino que llevó consigo la misión de explorar los límites del conocimiento humano, la cultura y el tiempo. La India se convierte, en su obra, en un símbolo del "otro", de lo desconocido, de aquello que está más allá del alcance de la razón occidental. Este encuentro con lo exótico no fue simplemente un choque cultural. Para Paz, la India fue un catalizador para reflexionar sobre los grandes temas que ya lo habían inquietado desde sus primeras incursiones poéticas: la soledad, la muerte, el erotismo, la temporalidad. En la mística oriental, encontró un espejo para confrontar su propia visión del mundo y para cuestionar las certezas arraigadas en su propia cultura. A lo largo de su obra, y en especial en libros como “Ladera Este” y “El mono gramático”, vemos cómo la India no es simplemente un escenario, sino un concepto filosófico que atraviesa su pensamiento. El vínculo entre la poesía y la diplomacia en la vida de Octavio Paz es profundo. Para él, ambos oficios compartían una misma vocación: la búsqueda del entendimiento. Si el poeta intenta con las palabras capturar lo que parece inefable, el diplomático trata de mediar entre posiciones aparentemente irreconciliables. Ambos requieren una sensibilidad extrema para percibir las contradicciones, para leer entre líneas, para entender que a menudo lo más importante no es lo que se dice, sino lo que se calla. Paz, con su aguda inteligencia y su refinada capacidad de observación, fue capaz de aplicar esta sensibilidad tanto a sus relaciones diplomáticas como a su creación literaria. Uno de los aspectos más interesantes de su vida como diplomático es cómo abordó la tensión entre su papel oficial y su vocación poética. Para muchos, estos dos mundos estarían en conflicto: la diplomacia, con su estructura rígida y sus convenciones, parecería ser el opuesto natural de la poesía, que es libertad, creación y cuestionamiento.
